GA is back to normal

The GA feeds are back to normal. In fact, they only had a brief hic up. All is well now so keep up with your English language go/weiqi/baduk.

GA Best Go Blogs get better

The GA editor has reviewed the Best Go Blogs feed and has actioned a few changes. GA does not try to be an exhaustive aggregator of English language go information. We really only want to aggregate the best available information. As a result, the updated best blogs feed includes three trusted classics augmented by two new active new comers. Enjoy!

Go-ings on: A new teenaged giant-killer?

The AGA EJournal - which is not available by RSS or I would add to the Go Aggregator - carries great stories on professional Go as well as keeping you up to date on the American Go scene. Here is a great story about a new Chinese teenager, Chen Yaoye, defeating Lee Sedol in the Kangwon-Land Cup.

"Lee Sedol 9P of Korea lost to Chinese teenager Chen Yaoye 5P in the Kangwon-Land Cup, an international team match between China and Korea. This is a new team tournament in which games are played one at a time, with the winner continuing until one team runs out of players. The Koreans started with Lee, who beat Piao Wenyao 5P of China in the first game, but then lost to Chen by 1.5 points. Chen next defeated Hong Sungji 4P of Korea by 2.5 points before losing to An Chotyeong 9P of Korea. An then beat Wang Xi 5P of China to end the first stage of the tournament in Seoul. The second stage will be in Hangzhou, China, at the end of March when An takes on one of the two remaining Chinese, either Chang Hao 9P or Luo Xihe 9P, both formidable opponents with recent international title wins to their credit. The Korean team still includes Lee Changho 9P and Cho Hunhyun 9P, so the second stage should be quite a contest. The remarkable teenager Chen is also in the finals of the international LG Cup, where he must play a best-of-five match against his countryman Gu Li 7P."

Go-ings on - The strange tale of the cursed goban

ChiyoDad, a must read blogger for anyone planning on buying go equipment on eBay, or indeed online anywhere, shares the strange tale of a USD $10,000 goban up for auction on eBay for USD $2,000 due to its unusual kami. Here is an excerpt from his post:

"That statement perhaps begs the question why I am selling an object with which I am so clearly in love. The simple fact is that this board is cursed. From the moment it entered my home my life went south. There are people out there at the close of this annus atrox that need your sympathy more than I, but let me tell you, I have had a string of bad luck, karmic retribution and hellfire from that day forward. If there is kami in this board it is baaad kami. And there is big kami in this board; I did not lose a single game I played on it. So trust me on this, if it is not a demon escaped from the nine hells, it is the hungry ghost of the Nabeshima Bakeniku. That, or whoever made this thing was a bitter man, if man he be."

Go-ings on - Feng Yun in the NYT

Subscribers of the GA will be interested to read the January 14 New York Times article profiling Feng Yun. It is interesting to read her thoughts on the life of a Go professional living in "the desert of this game", also known as the United States of America (although just about any place outside of China, Japan, or Korea would fit this description). She is planning to fare well at the American Oza this week even though she has trouble finding decent opponents to practice against.

Update: Feng Yun swept the American Oza for a 6-0 record.

It has been genuinely fascinating to run GA for the past few months and I am looking forward to what 2006 will bring to online go/weiqi/badook community. Go-ings on - Game of note in the Samsung semi

The GA Pro Go News feed woke up this week after roughly three weeks of dormancy! Go4Go posted a story about an exciting game between Luo Xihe and Choi Choelhan in the 10th Samsung semi-final. This game is really worth taking a look at. Luo walks away from a triple ko at around move 245 thereby sacrificing a 25 stone group. In the end Luo still manages to win by 7.5 points. Check out the game here.

Go-ings on - Go game copyright

It looks like the great go game copyright debate has died down for the time being on rec.games.go (you may have been following it in the GA Go Chatter feed) and elsewhere. For those of you who missed it, the debate involved a raging debate over the copyright of professional go game records and collections of records. The chief player in keeping the debate alive was Frank de Groot, developer of Moyogo, who passionately defended his action of incorporating game records from numerous sources into the game database distributed with Moyogo.

One good thing seems to have arisen out of the ashes of this good old fashioned news group flame war, Frank has published a collection of over 40,000 professional go game records absolutely free of copyright restrictions on his site. May these games enrich your digital go research!

Like to buy Go stuff?

There is a lot of Go stuff available on the online auction site eBay these days. Asian importers/exporters are really taking advantage of eBay as a great low overhead tool for reaching into the English speaking marketplace. One of GA's Best Go Blogs, Chiyodad Learns Go, has recently covered this phenomena here and here. Inspired by these posts, I have put together a feed targeting recently posted Go related items on eBay. While it is not perfect ("Go" is an ambiguous search term), I think that many of you will find this very useful:

I now have five English language aggregated Go feeds online for your meditation and study. You can read them right here or subscribe to them with your favorite RSS reader (see to links to the right). Please let me know if you enjoy them and if you know of other online Go resources that I should add - especially if they are available in some XML format (i.e. RSS, RDF, ATOM, etc.)

Now I just need to work on the site design!
